Say goodbye to worries and hello to happy, healthy skin for your little one with Baby sebamed.
Infantile atopic dermatitis, often referred to as eczema, is a common skin condition that typically appears during infancy or early childhood.
The symptoms of infantile atopic dermatitis can vary but often include red, itchy patches of skin, which may become dry, scaly, cracked, or oozing. These patches commonly appear on the face, scalp, cheeks, and behind the ears, but can also affect other areas of the body.
The exact cause of infantile atopic dermatitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Babies with a family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies are at a higher risk of developing the condition.
Environmental factors such as dry air, harsh soaps, and certain fabrics can also trigger flare-ups.
Baby sebamed products are specifically designed to help provide gentle yet effective care for delicate baby skin, even in cases of eczema.
Our products help to mimic the natural acidity of healthy skin with its pH 5.5 formula.

Say goodbye to that unwanted shine and hello to a radiant, healthy complexion.
]]>We understand the unique needs of men's skin and have developed products specifically to address those needs.
Here's why sebamed should be your trusted skincare brand:
Our skin has a delicate balance, and maintaining the right pH level is crucial. The natural acidic substances found within sweat and sebum contribute to our skin's pH.
Altering this balance can lead to an imbalanced skin microbiome, potentially causing skin conditions, such as Psoriasis, Acne and Eczema.
Traditional men's skincare products are often too alkaline, leading to irritation that disrupts the skin microbiome.
Sebamed products are formulated to match the pH level of healthy skin – pH 5.5. This means our products help support your skin's natural balance, reducing the risk of irritation and other skin concerns.
It's not just us saying our products are effective – we're backed by science! Every sebamed product is developed in collaboration with dermatologists, pharmacists, and hospitals.
More than 400 scientific studies have tested the effectiveness and compatibility of our products for all skin types. We do this to ensure your skin is in safe hands with us.
At sebamed, we only use ingredients that are truly beneficial for your skin. Our products contain active, skin-friendly ingredients that help support the acid mantle and restore the pH level of your skin. We're all about promoting healthy skin from the inside out.
No matter your skin type or concern, sebamed has a product formulated to support your skin.
Skin concerns such as oily skin, sensitive skin, and acne are signs that your skin is imbalanced, and that your skin's pH is not at the correct level.
We have a variety of ranges which have been specially formulated to help restore the skin’s balance and address some of these skin concerns such as our Clear Face Range for those suffering with Acne, our Anti-Dry range for those suffering with dry skin, and more.
Sebamed is recommended by dermatologists and skin experts worldwide. What's more, health professionals recommend our products as a supportive therapy for skin conditions like psoriasis.
When you choose sebamed, you're choosing a brand with a strong endorsement from the experts. No other traditional men’s skincare brand can say that!
Just like investing in a quality pair of shoes that will last, investing in a reliable skincare brand is a smart choice. Sebamed products offer long-term benefits for your skin's natural barrier by supporting its defence against external factors.
By establishing a consistent, long-term routine with a trusted skincare brand like sebamed, you're investing in your skin's future health.
Traditional men's skincare brands often offer very little value for your money. With sebamed, we believe that high-quality ingredients should be accessible. Skincare is essential and should not be an unnecessary expense. Our products provide top-notch care at an affordable price.
In the realm of men's skincare, sebamed stands out as a brand that's both reliable and effective. We understand the unique needs of men's skin and have formulated our products to address those needs specifically.

]]>In this comprehensive guide, we'll embark on a journey to decipher dermatitis by exploring its different types and delving into the tell-tale signs that can help you identify and manage this skin concern more effectively.
Dermatitis is a general term that describes a skin irritation.
It is a common condition that can manifest in various ways, depending on the type of dermatitis and its severity.
Here are some common signs of dermatitis:
This familiar type of dermatitis often appears during childhood and is characterised by red, itchy rashes. In adults it can manifest differently, often as scaly patches. It's commonly associated with allergic reactions and genetics.
Triggered by skin contact with irritants or allergens, this type of dermatitis results in localised redness, itching, and sometimes blisters. Occupational exposure, cosmetics, or certain plants can be the culprits.
Often appearing on the scalp, face, chest, seborrheic dermatitis presents as greasy, yellowish, and scaly patches. It's associated with an overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia in the hair follicles.
Sebamed has an array of products to help soothe dermatitis by supporting and maintaining the skin's natural barrier, whether it be unexpected, chronic or re-appearing.

Read on to find out how to unlock the secrets to optimal balance in your intimate area at each stage of your life, and how you can support your vaginal health with the right wash.
]]>
The microflora is an intricate microecosystem of bacteria found in the vagina that helps to protect against infections.
This microecosystem is influenced by fluctuations in progesterone and oestrogen levels.
When the pH level of the intimate area is balanced, the microflora can flourish, and therefore protect the area.
When it becomes imbalanced, it can lead to infections, such as yeast infections and UTIs.
Therefore, it’s important to maintain this delicate balance by using a wash formulated to the correct pH level, depending on your reproductive stage.
The pH level of the vagina changes throughout womanhood due to the oestrogen hormone.
Incorporating a feminine wash into your skincare routine is essential for women at each stage of their lives. So let's break it down:
The vagina is self-cleaning, but the vulva is not.
Use a feminine wash that is formulated to the correct pH level, depending on what stage of life you are in, to maintain the vulva's microbiome balance.
Hormones fluctuate a lot during pregnancy and can cause the vaginal pH to change.
If the pH level becomes too acidic, it can lead to infections.
Wear cotton underwear and use a feminine wash formulated to the correct pH level of 3.8 to help restore balance.
It's important to keep a healthy pH balance during menstruation to help prevent bad bacteria growth.
An intimate wash formulated to the correct pH level of 3.8 will help to combat infections and restore balance.
Always clean blood residue and ensure the intimate area is breathable.
An intimate wash can also support the treatment of vaginal infections. Always consult your doctor at the first sign of an infection.
During and after the menopausal period you may experience discomfort and vaginal dryness.
To relieve this discomfort and dryness use an intimate wash formulated to a pH level of 6.8.

Let’s get to know the two important proteins that support our skin:
Collagen – a protein that helps to maintain the structure of the skin.
Elastin – another protein that supports the elasticity of the skin.
As we age, our skin naturally thins and the production of collagen and elastin decreases. Without these proteins, our skin’s elasticity and firmness diminishes, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging.
Not only that, but the pH balance of the skin barrier becomes increasingly important as skin ages.
The pH level of older skin tends to range between 5.5 – the pH level of healthy skin – and 6.5, causing the skin to become more alkaline.
This change in pH disrupts the skin’s natural protective barrier and can result in the loss of moisture.
Maintaining and fortifying the pH balance is crucial in supporting ageing skin.
There are three ingredients which can support your skin through the ageing process:
Hyaluronic Acid – reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and helps to retain the skin’s moisture.
Coenzyme Q10 – the skin’s natural active ingredient that helps prevent damage to collagen and elastin.
Vitamin E – supports the production of skin cells and maintains smoothness and elasticity.
These ingredients are essential in the journey to healthy skin.
The combination of all three help to restore skin’s vitality and rejuvenate new skin cells to help keep signs of ageing at bay.
We wish we could wave a magic wand and make the signs of ageing disappear.
But ageing is a natural process for us all. Embrace the signs and honour the change with the right skincare products.
Our products in our Anti-Ageing range are formulated with either Hyaluronic Acid, Coenzyme Q10 or Vitamin E the supportive ingredients for healthy skin.
sebamed Anti-Ageing Q10 Protection Cream:
Remember, it’s never too early to start your anti-ageing routine! The sooner you can support your skin, the better.
By the age of 30, the production of Coenzyme Q10, collagen and elastin decreases.
Use products formulated to support the production of these key ingredients to ensure the future of your skin as you age.
Let your skin do its thing and embrace the ageing process.

Psoriasis occurs when skin cells are replaced quicker than usual. New skin cells are produced at the deepest layer of the skin - the hypodermis - and gradually move up through the skin layers to the epidermis, the surface of the skin.
Once reached, the skin cells begin to die, which results in flaking. This whole process takes place approximately every 4 weeks.
But for people with Psoriasis, this process can occur much faster, with some people experiencing it over a few days. This means skin cells are unable to mature completely and often results in a build-up on the epidermis layer.
This build-up can cause the skin to become flaky and form rough, crusty patches. They normally appear on the elbows, knees and scalp but can appear anywhere on the body.
You cannot catch Psoriasis from a person. Often the condition occurs due to various reasons including:

]]>In this article, we explore the science behind your newborn's skin, what to look out for and how to protect them.
]]>At birth, baby's skin is at a pH level of 7.0 (neutral). In comparison, healthy adult skin is at a pH level of 5.5. This means your baby's skin is fragile and vulnerable.
But that's OK! It's natural and here's why.
The answer lies in the top layer of skin - the epidermis.
This top layer is very thin and can be easily damaged, as the protective function of the skin is not fully developed. As newborns grow, their skin develops its own natural protective barrier.
As parents, it's our job to protect our children and that includes their skin. We need to support and build that level of defence, so their skin becomes strong and healthy.
The best line of defence for your baby's skin is using the right products.
Products that are developed with a pH level of 5.5 help to stabilise a newborn's skin barrier and limit further damage to the thin epidermis layer.
By integrating these products into your baby's routine, you're ensuring their skin's future health.
Parenthood is not always easy and that's normal. (Hands up who hasn't had a good night's sleep in weeks!)
The same goes for your baby's skincare. As parents, we do everything we can to prevent skin problems from developing. But as we know, a newborn's skin is fragile and unfortunately some problems can occur:
This is a common skin condition usually found on the scalp, face and can affect the nappy area. The cause of cradle cap is unclear, but it's unlikely to bother your baby.
Symptoms:
This common condition occurs when the skin in the nappy area is damaged by the contact of urine, faeces, or the nappy rubbing against the skin for a long period. It can cause the skin barrier to break down, leaving your baby distressed and uncomfortable if not treated properly.
Symptoms:
The most common form of Eczema in babies is Atopic Eczema. This can become a long-term skin condition but is easily treated. It is often found on baby's face and scalp but can develop elsewhere on the body.
Symptoms:
The golden rule for protecting skin has always been less is more. But for newborn's skin, we believe simple is better.
Here are 5 ways to protect your baby's skin and support the skin's natural barrier:
Baby sebamed products are formulated exactly at pH 5.5 to support your baby's skin and develop the vital defence right from Day 1.
Now you know the science behind your baby's skin - it's as fascinating and challenging as parenthood!
]]>Begin by cleansing your face with sebamed's gentle cleansers, specifically formulated to maintain the skin's natural pH balance. Leave your skin bare for a moment and pay attention to how it feels. If your skin feels comfortable and not tight, it may not require additional skincare products. However, if you notice any signs of dryness or tightness, it indicates a need for proper moisturization.
For those experiencing dryness or tightness, sebamed offers a range of moisturisers specially designed for sensitive skin. Our sensitive lotion, in particular, provides the optimal balance of hydration and nourishment. Apply the sensitive lotion and observe the results over the next few days or hours.
After applying our sensitive lotion, carefully examine your skin. Should you notice enlarged pores or excess oiliness, it may be an indication that the cream is too rich for your skin type. In such cases, we recommend trying our lighter, non-comedogenic formulas to achieve a harmonious balance.
If your skin appears cracked or excessively dry despite moisturization, it may require a more intensive solution. Consider incorporating sebamed's thicker creams or increasing the frequency of application to provide the necessary nourishment and hydration. Our range of moisturisers offers options for different levels of hydration, ensuring your skin's needs are met.
Sebamed is dedicated to preserving the skin's natural pH balance. Our formulations are carefully crafted to have a pH level of 5.5, mirroring the skin's acidic state. This pH balance is crucial in maintaining a healthy skin barrier and promoting overall skin health.
As a leading skincare brand, sebamed offers a comprehensive range of products that prioritize your skin's well-being. From cleansers and moisturizers to toners and sunscreens, our collection is designed to be gentle and suitable for sensitive skin. Each product undergoes rigorous dermatological testing to ensure efficacy and compatibility.

Symptoms of atopic eczema include dry, itchy, cracked and sore skin that can either be localised in small patches or more widespread on the body. Affected areas often include the hands, insides of the elbows, backs of the knees and, for children, the face and scalp. Some people with atopic eczema may even experience fluctuations in the level of their symptoms from time to time.
However, this incredibly common skin condition also carries many myths and misconceptions that can be harmful to those with eczema. We’re here to debunk 3 common eczema myths.
To put it simply: You cannot “catch” eczema from another person. There is no way to contract eczema through physical contact.
Instead, atopic eczema is a genetic condition, meaning that if a parent already has eczema, there is a chance that their child will also develop eczema at some point. However, like most genetic factors, this is not definitive and your child may not develop eczema at all.
At this time, there is no definitive way to “cure” eczema. However, there are ways to manage, reduce and minimise symptoms.
Aside from medicinal intervention with over-the-counter or prescription treatments, making lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on your eczema symptoms. Using gentle, soap-free, hydrating skincare products regularly can help to soothe irritated skin.
With a pH value of 5.5, sebamed has a range of products that can help relieve eczema symptoms whilst supporting your skin’s barrier against allergens and harmful substances.
Although to some, eczema may appear as a superficial issue that is just itchy skin, for those living with atopic eczema, it can have a huge impact on various areas of their lives.
We all hate the feeling that there is an itch that we can’t quite scratch. Constantly scratching irritated skin can feel painful and potentially cause long-term skin damage or infections, especially if the skin is broken regularly. Not only this, but the chronic discomfort experienced from this itchy sensation may also impact an individual’s mental well-being if it interferes with their usual daily activities.
In addition, where eczema can present as red, scaley and sometimes broken skin, some individuals may feel negative about their appearance, leading to a feeling of self-consciousness and causing them to withdraw from socialisation or pursue irritating methods to conceal the affected skin (for example, using makeup or non-breathable clothes to cover up.)
Although atopic eczema is a long-term skin condition that can cause much discomfort, it is entirely natural to experience it. If you are concerned about your eczema symptoms, contact your doctor or dermatologist to consider a game plan to manage your symptoms. Finally, with these eczema myths officially busted, you can start to live your best life in the knowledge that you are more than your skin.

Dry skin is often a result of the underproduction of oil, or sebum, that keeps the skin moisturised and glowing. This skin type can be affected by environmental factors, as well as genetics. However, dehydrated skin is the result of a lack of water in the skin. Dehydrated skin can affect anyone, including those with naturally oily skin. In short: Dehydrated skin = lack of water, dry skin = lack of oil.
In terms of texture, dryness can present as scaly, red, flaky irritated skin and can be sometimes associated with eczema and psoriasis. Dry skin doesn’t automatically indicate the presence of a skin condition though.
Meanwhile, dehydration can manifest as itchy, dull skin that increases the appearance of fine lines and under-eye circles. The best way to identify if your skin is dehydrated is to try the pinch test; pich a small amount of skin and hold for a few seconds. If your skin takes a few moments to bounce back, your skin is likely dehydrated.
Because dry skin is often related to genetic or environmental factors, a lot of care is concentrated on managing irritation and encouraging healthy oil production.
One key way to care for dry skin is to be sure to use warm, never hot water, on your skin. By using hot water on your skin it will strip the skin of the valuable natural oils that it produces, which can be problematic if your skin is already underproducing this. Don’t wash away your skin’s hard work!
Secondly, if your skin barrier is damaged, you may find that your skin is dryer than normal. Whilst healing your skin barrier, ensure that you are using a rich moisturiser to lock in any additional moisture to your skin throughout the day and night.
Finally, look for specialist skincare to tackle dry skin, such as the sebamed Anti-Dry Range. This collection keeps dry skin and hair at bay, reducing irritation and inflammation as well as protecting the skin barrier with pH 5.5.
Dehydrated skin is often a symptom of something deeper, and can be a sign that you are dehydrated overall. It may seem obvious by the first step to caring for dehydrated skin is to get hydrated by making sure that you are increasing your water intake. Of course, if you’re finding that increasing water intake doesn’t seem to help at all, as well as frequently experiencing symptoms such as; dizziness, dry mouth, light-headedness or overall weakness, you should consider speaking to a medical professional.
Following this, using our Anti-Ageing skincare products can assist in providing extra hydration to the skin, as well as reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because mature skin often struggles to maintain hydration as it ages, anti-ageing products are specially formulated to encourage the holding of water in the skin.
Taking care of your skin involves understanding the differences between dry and dehydrated skin and tailoring your skincare routine accordingly. By properly caring for your skin, you can maintain a healthy, glowing complexion.
]]>The skin barrier is also formed by the acid mantle, which helps to defend against the growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi that could damage your skin and lead to infections and other skin conditions. A damaged skin barrier can lead to itchiness, irritation and even burning sensations, as well as dehydration.
A protected skin barrier isn’t just the key to healthy skin, but it is also important for your overall health. Because of this, it’s important to understand some of the ways that you may be damaging your skin barrier.
When it comes to skincare, the gentler the better. Using harsh cleansers or over-exfoliating can strip away the oils that preserve your skin barrier, ultimately eroding it away.
Avoid damaging your skin barrier during your skincare routine by using gentle, soap-free products with a pH value of 5.5. By using products with the average pH value of healthy skin, the health of the acid mantle within the skin barrier is strengthened.
All sebamed products are specially formulated with a pH value of 5.5 to cleanse and nourish the skin without destroying the natural protection of the skin barrier. Find out more here.
It’s not just physical stress that can impact your skin barrier, but also psychological stress.
The overproduction of cortisol reduces the production of oils and lipids that gel the skin barrier together. Without this, the hydration maintained by the maintained skin barrier can escape, leading to dehydrated skin that highlights fine lines and wrinkles. Alongside this, cortisol can encourage sebum overproduction, meaning that you become more oily and therefore more acne prone.
By taking some time to practice self-care and removing yourself from stressful situations where possible, you can minimise the effect of stress on the skin barrier. You can read more about finding time for self-care here.
We all love to soak in the sun when it shows its face, but overdoing it can lead to more skin concerns than embarrassing tan lines. Even low levels of UV rays from the sun can negatively impact your skin barrier.
When exposed to UV rays, the proteins that keep your cells appeared together become weaker and lose their ability to bond with other cells. The physical representation of this is when your skin peels after being sunburnt. Moreover, prolonged UV exposure causes further damage to your skin barrier, which can lead to serious diseases such as actinic keratosis or even skin cancer.
Limiting sun exposure is one surefire way to prevent extensive UV damage to your skin barrier. However, regularly using SPF products can offer prolonged protection for your skin barrier; ensure that you’re applying SPF all year round (Yes, even during Winter and whilst it is overcast) for the best defence.
Even the most careful skincare enthusiasts can experience damage to their skin barrier. If you start to experience signs that your skin barrier may be compromised, here are some tips to repair your skin’s key line of defence:
Consider if your skin has experienced any external changes recently. Whether you’ve been spending too long in the sun or have tried a new product or even have been going through a stressful period, try to stop your skin’s exposure to this as soon as possible.
As discussed, using harsh products and even overusing gentler products can impact your skin. Strip your skincare straight back to just 3 steps: Cleansing, hydrating and moisturising with products specially formulated with a pH5.5 value.
SOS: Save our Skin. Look for gentle products with hyaluronic acid, shea butter and vitamin e as a start when soothing your damaged skin barrier. Glycerin and dimethicone also are great to pull moisture into the skin. Prioritising thicker cream moisturisers can help to lock in any added hydration and act as a stand-in for your skin barrier whilst it heals.
Sebamed skincare products are specially formulated to help maintain, strengthen and repair your skin barrier. You can shop our full range of products here.
]]>The role of sebaceous glands is to lubricate hair and your skin to stop it from drying out by producing sebum. The sebaceous glands are particularly sensitive to testosterone production, which can encourage excess sebum production.
When the glands produce too much sebum, the excess mixes with dead skin cells and forms a plug in the sebaceous glands. This is what causes whiteheads and blackheads to appear on the skin. They can also interact with bacteria, leading to nodules, cysts and papules.
Although acne is such a common skin condition, it remains widely misunderstood by many; Acne has many myths surrounding the origins and possible “cures”. We’re here to debunk 3 common acne myths.
The idea that acne is exclusive to teenagers is one of the most widespread myths. Although most teenagers will experience some form of acne due to the hormonal changes they go through, many adults will still have acne.
For many, especially those who menstruate, fluctuating testosterone levels will still impact sebum production, triggering acne breakouts. Furthermore, those who go through menopause have reported a drop in acne flare-ups when their estrogen and progesterone levels drop during this period.
Finally, genetics can play a part at any age. If your parents developed acne as adults, you’re likely to experience adult acne too.
This can be one of the most harmful myths surrounding acne due to the shame it carries for many. Although gentle cleansing can help to reduce bacteria from your face, it’s unlikely to entirely cure acne. In fact, over-cleansing can cause more harm than good, as this can dry out your skin, encouraging even more sebum production.
As discussed, acne is linked to excess sebum production, which is perceived as “oil”. Instead of going overboard with face washing and using harsh cleansers, instead, look to gentle soap-free cleansers that help to manage excess sebum production. Sebamed Clear Face Anti-Bacteria Cleansing Foam provides gentle pore deep, antibacterial cleansing without drying out the skin.
Say it with us: soothe don’t squeeze! No matter how safe and clean you think you are being when you pop your pimples, the potential risks are never worth it.
If you are a picker or popper, every time you go to war with your pimples, you trigger inflammatory responses which make them even harder to heal. Additionally, whether you are using your fingers or special tools, you are still running the risk of introducing bacteria into what is now an open wound. All of this can cause acne scars that don’t go away easily.
However, we know it never feels great to have an angry pimple on your face. By using a spot treatment, such as sebamed Clear Face Anti-Pimple Gel, you can provide fast relief to irritation, as well as inhibit bacteria growth whilst pimples and blackheads dry out.
Acne is often a long-term condition which can cause a lot of discomfort and self-esteem issues. However, it is entirely normal and natural to experience. With these acne myths busted you can start to live your best life in the knowledge that you are more than your skin.
If you’d like to support your acne-prone skin, sebamed offers a range of pH 5.5 products that inhibit acne-causing bacteria whilst supporting the skin’s natural barrier function against dryness and irritation. You can shop our dermatologically tested Clear Face range here.
]]>Estrogen
Estrogen keeps the skin plump and firm by stimulating the natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
Progesterone
This revitalising hormone assists in the secretion of thyroid hormones, which ensures that the skin is receiving the necessary nutrients, blood and oxygen to glow. Progesterone also has protective properties that prevent the skin from becoming damaged by stress and can compress the look of pores.
Testosterone
It is often misunderstood that testosterone only affects men, however, this hormone can be found in everyone. Testosterone stimulates the sebaceous glands which produce sebum (natural oils) for your skin.
It’s not just hormone changes from menstruation that affect the skin, but any state that creates fluctuations in your hormones, such as pregnancy or menopause, can have an impact. By knowing how that will have an impact, you can adapt your skincare accordingly.
We all know that the skin’s appearance changes during the menstrual cycle, but depending on where you are in your cycle depends on which are the dominant hormones.
On days 1-6 of the cycle estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels are all at a low. Because of this, the skin may be drier and duller as well as more sensitive. Making sure that you’re taking steps to keep your skin hydrated can keep your skin feeling refreshed. This can include drinking more water and opting for a more hydrating moisturiser. Additionally, avoiding using new products and waxing can prevent any further irritation.
In the next phase (days 7-16), estrogen production is increased and reaches its peak by day 12, allowing a healthy cell turnover. Use a gentle exfoliant to remove dead cells and reveal the fresh glow underneath, but don’t overdo it with products.
During days 17-24, estrogen levels will drop and progesterone will reach its peak. This can increase oil build-up and the chance for breakouts. Using gentle pore-deep cleansers can help to manage excess sebum production.
Finally, in the phase right before your period, testosterone becomes dominant leading to the period breakout that we are all familiar with. Using anti-bacterial cleansers and spot treatments can help to manage these breakouts.
During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone production is increased, which creates the “pregnancy glow”. However, this combination can cause your pores to secrete excess oil, which can also contribute to the appearance of chloasma. This common skin condition presents darker patches of skin particularly on the face and sun-exposed areas.
It can be difficult to know if your skin isn’t loving your skincare routine, especially as many products take a few weeks to really show their effect. However, it’s important to identify the warning signs your skin is showing you when using certain products so that you can prevent deep damage to your skin’s acid mantle.
The most obvious sign that your skin is reacting poorly to certain skincare products is irritation. Skin irritation can present as dryness that causes itchiness. This can occur almost immediately after applying products and is very common with products that contain harsh cleansers, fragrances or harsh active ingredients.
Occasionally, irritation can occur as a result of incorrectly using products rather than a reaction to particular ingredients.
Breakouts can be a consequence of various environmental or internal changes. However, if you’ve recently added something new to your skincare routine and you’re experiencing more pimples than usual, that’s a sign that your skin is reacting to your skincare.
The new products that you are using may not be removing the excess dirt and sebum from your skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Additionally, if you’re using a heavier moisturiser this can restrict your pores, leading to breakouts.
If you’ve started using a gentler cleanser or toner, this could be your skin becoming used to a less harsh cleanse. Be patient for a few weeks whilst your skin adapts, but if the problem persists, consider swapping out the product for a new one or returning to the previous one you were using.
It’s a common misconception that tight skin is healthy skin. In fact, if your skin is feeling tight that indicates that you’ve over-cleansed the natural oils from your skin. This can compromise the health of your skin’s natural barrier and impact the rest of your skincare routine.
Try using a gentler or oil-based cleanser, depending on your skin type. This can help preserve the natural oils produced whilst keeping your skin cleansed.
Redness may be one of the most visually concerning reactions to skincare as it is often the most immediate and visible. If you find that a new product is making your skin to become inflamed, immediately stop using the product as this could be a sign of a serious reaction. If redness persists, seek medical advice.
Nothing is more frustrating than trying that new wonder product and finding that it isn’t delivering the results that you want it to. Although certain skincare products take a certain amount of time to start showing positive changes to your skin if you’re finding that after a month of consistent use there’s no improvement on your skin it might be time to retire that product.
Although your skin will tell you quickly if your skincare isn’t working for you, it’s always better to be safe with new skin products than sorry.
Patch testing new products is key to avoiding a widespread reaction, even if your skin isn’t particularly sensitive. Try a small sample of each product before you commit to applying it to your entire face and pay attention to your skin’s response (or lack of). If you experience any of the skin warning signs, it’s best to avoid using the product.
When introducing new skincare to your routine, make sure that you’re only adding one new product at a time. This means that if you experience any of the skin warning signs, it is easier to pinpoint what product is causing the problem and cycle it out of your routine.
Finally, pay attention to your skin type when shopping for skincare. If you have oily skin, likely, a dry skin range would not be loved by your skin. Additionally, if you have sensitive skin, be sure that you are using gentle skincare to prevent skin warning signs.
Sebamed offers a range of skincare products that are gentle and focus on promoting the health of the skin with a pH value 5.5.
]]>Different and changing weather can wreak havoc on your skin condition, but you can be prepared for anything the seasons can throw at you with sebamed.
Your skin loves environmental consistency, so when the humidity and temperature of summer drops and cooler weather rolls around, you may experience your skin crying out for hydration. This can lead to cracks in the skin and extreme dryness, which lead to inflammation and can impact the health of your skin’s microbiome.
Aside from environmental factors, our behaviour changes when it gets cooler. So by cranking up the heating or taking hot showers and baths, you can be negatively impacting your skin and contributing to dryness and irritation.
Tackle autumn and winter dryness from head to toe with the sebamed Anti-Dry range. First, gently cleanse your skin by using our Anti-Dry Derma Soft Wash Emulsion in a warm shower. Lightly towel dry and follow this with our Anti-Dry Hydrating Body Lotion to help lock in that moisture. In fact, our lotion has been found to boost hydration by 26% in just 3 weeks. This dream duo works hard to relieve skin tension and irritation; leaving it soft and supple.
Protect your skin day & night from seasonal dryness with our Anti-Dry Face Bundle. Start your day by applying our Anti-Dry Day Defence Cream; packed with vitamin A+E this wonder cream protects the skin from environmental factors whilst maintaining the hydration of the skin. At the end of the day, reach for sebamed Anti-Dry Night Intensive Cream to relieve any itching, roughness, tension or redness and to maintain your skin hydration overnight.
Finally, cooler seasons can suck the moisture from your hair, leading to static and frizzy hair. Additionally, like the rest of your skin, your scalp can experience dryness. Use sebamed Anti-Dry Revitalizing Shampoo to regenerate dry, dull and lifeless hair and experience relief from a dry scalp.
Where your skin may experience dryness from the transition to cold weather, when the weather gets warm again, you’re likely to experience the opposite. Increased humidity can lead to the skin feeling greasy where oil is overproduced and trapped on the surface of the skin.
Regular cleansing can help with this oil production, but make sure that it is gentle on the skin. Our Clear Face Cleansing Bar is perfect for spring & summer skincare. It’s also perfect for tossing into your washbag for any travels you may be on in the warmer months.
If you’re experiencing oil buildup during the day, sebamed Clear Face Mattifying Cream is fast absorbing and reduces the skin’s oily shine and the formation of spots, blackheads and skin impurities.
The seasons changing is inevitable, but the way you react with your skincare can make a huge difference to your skin both during the transitional periods and the seasons themselves.
]]>You may notice your skin having a duller complexion, or becoming drier, your pores may become noticeable and you may likely notice new wrinkles. This is known as mature skin and is considered to start roughly around age 35.
No two people’s experience with mature skin is the same either, a lot of internal and external factors contribute to how your mature skin presents. These can include:
Although everyone’s skin is different, there are some general things you can do to care for your mature skin that apply to most people. Read on for our top 5 tips for caring for mature skin.
We all wish we could turn back the clock sometimes, and when it comes to mature skincare, this is no exception. Keeping sun safe and applying SPF regularly is one preventative measure you can take against premature ageing skin.
Starting a skincare routine early can also keep your skin in great condition before mature skin begins to show. It’s generally recommended that you begin integrating Q10 or Anti-Ageing products into your skincare routine from the age of 20 to prevent the formation of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots.
Products that feature Q10 are essential for appropriate maturing skin. The coenzyme Q10 is a natural active ingredient in the skin that helps prevent damage to collagen, and elastin and promotes skin cell rejuvenation, which starts decreasing from the age of 30.
Furthermore, keeping your skin healthy will always be beneficial, especially for mature skin. At sebamed, we formulate our products at a pH value of 5.5. to encourage the healthy development of the acid mantle. This supports the skin’s defence against environmental factors and drying out.
When it comes to mature skin, hydration is key! This, again, is a great preventative measure for the development of fine lines and wrinkles. However, if you neglected hydration before it’s not too late to start now.
Using warm, not hot, water on your skin, avoiding harsh soaps and adding hydrating products to your skincare routine all contribute to hydrated skin. sebamed Anti-Ageing Wrinkle Filler can be used on the face to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles in just 28 days*. Pair this with sebamed Q10 Anti-Ageing Firming Body Lotion on the rest of your body to improve the elasticity of the skin and increase skin smoothness. Both of these products leave your skin incredibly hydrated and youthful looking.
Exfoliating mature skin is a delicate balancing game, but a very necessary step for radiant skin. When skin ages, it loses the ability to quickly shed dead skin cells which can lead to a rough, dull complexion. Because of this, it is important to regularly exfoliate. However, mature skin can be thin and delicate, therefore you should be gently exfoliating no more than twice a week.
sebamed Clear Face Gentle Scrub is the perfect addition to any mature skincare routine. Offering gentle, pore-deep exfoliation, dead skin cells are buffed away for fresh-looking skin.
When you’ve done so much work to care for your mature skin, you’ll want to maintain the results.
Complete your mature skincare routine with sebamed Q10 Anti-Ageing Protection Cream. Packed with refreshing Vitamin E, antioxidants and all-important Q10, this cream is the perfect finale to an expert mature skincare routine.
Although there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to mature skin, taking the appropriate steps can help you achieve your youthful skin goals. Additionally, with both Q10 and a formulation of pH 5.5, the sebamed Anti-Ageing range is specially formulated to give the best care for mature skin.

]]>Read on to get the full lowdown on the why and how you should be layering skincare.
No matter the size of your skincare routine, it is essential that you are applying your products in a particular order. By applying them in the correct order, you are making sure that everything that you are applying has its time and chance to work on the skin, rather than applying certain products that may block others due to consistency or active ingredients.
Furthermore, using individual products with layering, rather than multi-purpose products, can let you create a more tailored and individual skincare routine. This is because you can use individual products to target different skincare concerns or goals you may have.
As with all skincare, it is a highly personal thing and there are no strict rules. However, if you’re looking to start layering, here are some quick tips and tricks.
Look at the consistency of your products. Start with your thinnest products and move through your products to your thickest. By using this method, you are allowing the thinnest products to sink in and using the thickest products to lock in all the goodness you just applied!
Additionally, when layering your skincare, give the products time to absorb and settle. Not only does this make sure you’re not washing off your products before they’ve had the time to work their magic, but this also gives you the space to practice self-care. If you slow down when applying your skincare, it’ll feel more like pampering than a chore.
Now, those are some pointers, but how do we put them into practice?
We all know that cleansing is the first step in every skincare routine. Sebamed Cleansing Bars produce a wonderful lather that provides gentle pore deep cleansing. This will ensure that you remove any makeup and impurities. If you want to try double cleansing, follow this with Sebamed Clear Face Cleansing Foam to remove any extra impurities left on the skin, whilst the antibacterial cleansing complex helps to soothe acne-prone skin.
Once you have completed cleansing, refresh and soothe the skin with a toner. Sebamed Clear Face Facial Toner removes excess oil, sebum and dirt particles from the skin whilst protecting the skin from dehydration. This begins the rehydration process in your evening skincare routine and can soothe any skin irritation that you may be experiencing.
Stop pimples in their tracks by applying your spot treatment before moisturiser so it has time to penetrate the skin. Sebamed Clear Face Anti-Pimple Gel provides fast relief from pimples, blackheads and impurities by soothing irritation and protecting from flaky patches once they have dried out.
The skin around your eye is delicate, so eye creams tend to be thinner than face moisturisers. That’s why you should apply your eye cream before the rest of your moisturiser. Sebamed Q10 Anti-Ageing Lifting Eye Cream protects the elasticity of the eye area to reduce visible wrinkles in 28 days. Apply a grain of rice-sized amount of product under and to the outer corner of the eye at night.
Finally, use a moisturiser to lock in all of those products. Sebamed Anti-Dry Night Intensive Cream is the perfect thickness to finish off your evening skincare routine. This easily-absorbed, non-greasy cream stabilises the moisture balance of the skin and protects the skin’s acid mantle with its pH 5.5 value.
Layering is a great way to organise your skincare routine to ensure that you are maximising results! Try it for yourself today.
]]>Life is busy and it can be so hard to find just 10 minutes for us on any day of the week but finding time for self-care is essential to good mental health.
Self-care can help maintain self-confidence and self-esteem. It can help boost inner-strength and give us that spring in our step that we need to get up and go. Just a small amount of self-care a day can make the world of difference. Here are some tips on how to make time for self-care:
If you want to find out more about how to make time for self-care, why not head over to our ‘Finding time for self-care’ blog.
The phrase ‘you’ll never regret a work-out’ couldn’t be closer to the truth when it comes to our mental health.
When we exercise, the levels of serotonin and endorphins increase in our brain. These are the chemicals that make us feel happy and so it’s no wonder that there is a direct link between feeling good and feeling happy.
Besides from the physical benefits of regular exercise, attending the gym or an exercise class or even going on a long walk with a friend encourages you to get out and socialise offering the opportunity to talk to other people.
Family and friends can help you deal with the stresses of life, they can make you feel cared for by offering a listening ear and a support system. Talking to people who you feel you can trust can help you offload your worries; they can offer different views on what’s going on inside your own head.
Socialising doesn’t always have to be face-to-face, although face-to-face is the best way to get out and about, but if you aren’t feeling up to it, a phone call or even a quick text can help you stay connected and give you the opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings with those who care about you most.
Sleep and mental health are closely connected. Anxiety can cause your thoughts to race making it hard to sleep, whereas depression can lead to oversleeping.
Here are some tips on how you can improve your sleep:
There are strong links between what we eat and how we feel about ourselves. Food can have a lasting effect on our mental health. In order to stay healthy, we need a well-balanced mix of nutrients.
Good food isn’t just good for our physical health, but it’s essential to our mental health too.
Food that is good for our mental and physical health include:
Most importantly, if you are finding it hard to look after or improve on your mental health, we advise that you talk about your feelings with someone that you trust. That could be a friend, family member or a health care professional. You should never suffer with mental health a]]>
Your skin is your biggest organ, and its appearance plays a factor in the way you feel and think about yourself. That’s why it’s essential that you know how to take care of it by learning how to deal with stress and reduce the impact it may have on your skin. Detailed below are some of the ways stress can affect our skin and our top tips on how to manage and control them:
When you are experience stress your body releases a hormone called cortisol which leads to an overproduction of oil in your skin glands causing Acne breakouts.
So, what can you do to prevent those breakouts? First of all, it’s important to learn how you can prevent or let go of stress in the first place. Regular exercise is a huge stress reliever and can help you burn off all of your negative energy that you’ve built up throughout the day. A gym session, swim or even just a walk can be the ultimate natural stress relief treatment.
But what about when it comes to looking after your Acne prone skin? Using gentle washes on your skin regularly can help keep the skin clean and keep breakouts to a minimum. At Sebamed, we have a range of gentle skincare products available to help you keep the breakouts at bay. You can find them here.
Stress can impact your immune system causing your skin to be more sensitive triggering rashes, hives, and redness.
Combating skin rashes is tough when you have already sensitive skin, however, there are lots of ways that you can help prevent rashes and redness. One of our favourite tips is to eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg. Eating too many processed, sugary foods can trigger inflammation inside your body.
It’s also important when you already have sensitive skin to use the right product. Sebamed’s specially formulated sensitive skincare range will help ensure that your skin is getting what it needs to look and feel its best.
Stress can irritate existing skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis and Rosacea leading to flare ups.
Although it might feel like a losing battle, it is possible to minimise flare ups through stress management and using the right products for you in your skincare routine. Taking time out for yourself is essential to manage your stress levels.
Find the time to engage in an activity that makes you feel relaxed or re-energised. Doing something that makes you feel happy like reading a book, taking a bath, listening to music, practising yoga or deep breathing exercises can give you that relaxed, feel-good feeling that your body needs.
It is important that when you are suffering with existing skin conditions, you are using products regularly which are formulated to relieve the symptoms of these. At Sebamed we love helping you feel your best and that’s why we have products suitable for all. If you need help managing symptoms or preventing flare ups, take a look at our skin concern products.
When you are stressed, you are likely to feel nervous or anxious. This can lead you to take your feelings out on your skin, picking at scabs or spots and rubbing or itching until it becomes red and sore.
One way to kick those nervous picking habits is to find something else to focus on. Keeping your hands busy in situations where you feel you want to touch your face such as squeezing a stress ball or making small, routine movements with your fingers may help you resist the urge.
Try to keep up a regular skin-care routine even on those days where you are feeling tired or anxious because neglect could worsen your skin issues.
Most importantly, if you are struggling with feelings of stress or anxiety, we advise that you confide in a trusted friend, family member or therapist. Sometimes, just having someone that you can talk to can help you feel stronger in your capability to manage stress.

By constantly putting your needs at the bottom of the pile it can eventually leave you feeling like you aren’t important and that can affect your self-confidence.
By making time for self-care and putting your own needs first every once in a while, you can boost your self-confidence and in return, gain a sense of empowerment helping you to feel like you can face each day with a positive attitude.
But how can you find the time? Here are four tips on how you can make time for self-care.
Many people think that when we say ‘make time for self-care’ it needs to be two solid hours a day spent washing your hair and applying skincare products in your bathroom mirror, but we know how unrealistic that is for most people.
Breaking up your self-care time means you only need to dedicate a few minutes here and there to your self-care activities. For example, taking five, quiet minutes in the bathroom in the morning to use your favourite face wash and moisturiser is still a way to take time for your needs. Those five minutes could be the difference between a good day and a bad one.
Even the smallest amounts of time can make the world of difference to the way you feel about yourself.
Giving up any precious sleeping time sounds like something you don’t want to do, right? But waking up a few minutes earlier could have its benefits.
If you’re struggling to find any ‘me time’ during the day, setting a slightly earlier alarm might just give you that time to yourself that you’ve been craving.
Imagine the bliss when everyone else in your house is still fast asleep and you actually have twenty minutes to enjoy some peaceful self-care time – alone! Sounds like the perfect time for a hot bubble bath without interruption or a simple skincare routine.
This is one of the most important tricks to making sure you get your self-care time. The whole point of self-care is to help you feel more relaxed, but, complicated routines can have the opposite effect on us.
Create a simple self-care routine that doesn’t require too much time or energy. A simple two step skincare routine for example, an evening facewash and hydrating lotion application is enough to help you unwind and feel relaxed.
Try to focus on how practising self-care makes you feel and let that dictate how you implement it into your daily routine.
If you don’t make time for self-care, you probably aren’t going to find the time. So why not start planning ahead and scheduling self-care into your day? You could set a reminder for yourself at 7pm and make it a non-negotiable appointment.
Planning ahead could be as simple as setting an earlier morning alarm and laying out your self-care products in the bathroom before you go to bed to eliminate any preparation stress in the morning.
Remember, self-care is essential to helping you feel confident, relaxed and empowered in everyday life.
Feeling fulfilled and happy means taking care of your body, mind, and soul. When you make time to take care of yourself, you give yourself the energy you need to face each and every day, and you are absolutely worth that.

Get to know these popular skin conditions better with our guide to skin concerns.
Acne is a common skin condition that can affect people of any age but commonly occurs in teenagers and younger adults due to hormonal changes. Around 95% of people aged 11-30 years old are affected by acne to some extent.
Symptoms
Characterised by spots, oily skin, and sometimes skin that’s hot or painful, acne mainly affects three areas of the body: face, back, and chest.
Acne is caused by hair follicles that have become blocked due to the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance created by the sebaceous glands. If the blocked hair follicle is “close to the surface of the skin, it bulges outwards, creating a whitehead. Alternatively, the plugged follicle can be open to the skin, creating a blackhead.” Plugged follicles can become contaminated and infected by normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin, causing papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts.
Treatment
Recommended acne treatments vary based on the severity of the case. Acne can be managed and prevented using soap-free, deep-cleansing products, such as the Clear Face Antibacterial Cleansing Foam. The Clear Face bundle is a must-have for acne-prone skin to stay clean and healthy.
Moderate and severe cases of acne may require extra treatment from prescription medicines or a course of antibiotics.
Dermatitis is a general term for irritated skin - it can occur in many forms and has many potential causes. Three examples of dermatitis include atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, and dandruff.
Symptoms
Atopic eczema causes areas of the skin to become itchy, dry, cracked, and sore. Typically, there are periods of improved symptoms, followed by ‘flare-ups’ where symptoms get worse. Eczema is most common on the hands, inside of the elbows or backs of the knees, and the face and scalp in children. You may be genetically predisposed to developing eczema if you have close family members with eczema.
Contact dermatitis occurs in response to specific triggers, such as allergies or irritants. Contact dermatitis symptoms include inflamed/irritated, blistered, dry, thickened, and cracked skin. It is most common on the hands and face but can be found anywhere on the body.
Dandruff presents white or grey flakes of skin on the scalp and within the hair, looking more noticeable in darker hair or if they fall onto your shoulders. There are many possible causes for dandruff, including eczema, contact dermatitis, tinea capitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or cradle cap.
Treatments
Treatments for eczema do not include a cure but easing and soothing of symptoms. Hydrating washes, moisturisers/emollients, and creams formulated to soothe eczema symptoms are great for nourishing the skin.
Contact dermatitis is normally cleared up by identifying and avoiding the triggering irritating substance. For relief and soothing, Sebamed has an array of skincare products to combat dermatitis symptoms and maintain the skin’s natural defence barrier.
Dandruff can be self-treated by consistently using Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, formulated to moisturise the scalp, revitalise the hair, and remove visible signs of dandruff irritation.
Psoriasis is a condition that causes patches of dry, red skin covered in silver scales, sometimes accompanied by itching or soreness.
Symptoms
The common types of psoriasis are plaque psoriasis (dry, red skin legions), scalp psoriasis, nail psoriasis, guttate psoriasis (drop-shaped sores), and inverse psoriasis (affecting the folds of the skin). The most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, accounting for 80-90% of cases.
Treatment
Psoriasis treatments help to keep the condition under control. From shampoo to body wash, Sebamed has a variety of products that you can use to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis and help protect your skin. More severe cases may require additional treatment from your GP or specialist.
]]>Remove your make-up properly
Removing your make-up properly is the best way to prevent dirt and oil build-up from the day’s make-up. Micellar water is great for gently removing dirt and make-up from the skin, without needing to be rinsed off. For heavier make-up days, opt for a more thorough face wash to ensure all make-up remnants, dirt, and oils are cleansed away.
Remember, never go to sleep with your make-up still on! Not washing off make-up before bed can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, premature ageing, eye infections, dirty pillowcases, and more.
Use products suitable for your skin type
Make-up can irritate your skin if you wear it for long periods – don’t make it worse with unsuitable skincare products. Sensitive and irritated skin needs gentle skincare products formulated to soothe and restore the skin’s natural protective barrier.
Do you long for a matte finish to your foundation, but have oily skin? Use a mattifying cream to lessen the skin’s oily shine and sebum production, whilst also moisturising the skin and reducing irritation.
For those who wear make-up to cover blemishes and acne-prone/impure skin, incorporate antibacterial cleansing foam into your skincare routine. This penetrates the pores for mild pore-deep cleansing, leaving the skin smooth and hydrated and protecting against skin barrier damage.
Wash your make-up brushes
Remember to wash your make-up brushes regularly to avoid the build-up of make-up, dirt, and oil in your brushes. For eyeshadow and brow brushes, clean after each use; for other brushes, clean at least weekly. If you’re a heavy make-up wearer, wash your brushes after every use to rinse away all the leftover make-up.
Did you know you can use our Liquid Face & Body Wash for washing your make-up brushes, too? Now your make-up brushes can feel as clean and soft as your skin!
Costume make-up do's and don’ts
Are you a regular wearer of costume make-up? Do you have intricate make-up plans every Halloween? Costume make-up and face/body paint can be harsher on the skin than everyday make-up and covers more areas of the skin, so take extra care before, during, and after wearing this type of make-up.
Here are some do’s and don’ts to follow when it comes to costume make-up and skincare:
Research shows that the skin microbiome plays a huge part in our skin's health; there is a complicated relationship between us, our skin's microbiome, and the environment.
What does the skin microbiome do?
Recent research shows the importance of our skin's microbiome for an intact acid mantle. The acid mantle is the hydrolipid film on the skin's surface; as it contains water, our skin can be assigned a pH value, which on average is pH 5.5. The acid mantle's job is to repel harmful microorganisms and negative environmental influences - this then protects the skin from infections, irritation, allergies, and drying out. A healthy skin microbiome promotes an intact acid mantle, which minimises the bacterial breakdown of sweat, reducing body odour and acting as a natural deodorant.
The importance of balance
The billions of microorganisms that form our skin's microbiome live in a dynamic balance. This balance is crucial for natural skin protection. A slightly acidic pH value of 5.5 for healthy skin supports the healthy balance between "good" and "bad" microorganisms. This protects the skin from harmful microorganisms and endogenous and exogenous factors.
Maintaining this delicate balance through appropriate skincare and protection is key. For example, avoid cleaning your skin with regular/normal soap, as the soapy water has a pH value of between 8 to 12, which can damage the acid mantle and disrupt the skin's microbiome. Also try to avoid "pH neutral" products, as these have a pH value of 7, harming the acid mantle. Sebamed's skincare products feature a pH value of 5.5 to promote healthy skin and protect the acid mantle.
How the skin's microbiome affects and is affected by…
External and environmental influences
A combination of many harmful influences - such as inadequate skincare, improper nutrition, mental stress, polluted air, and other environmental influences - can disrupt the skin microbiome's balance. This imbalance then disturbs the protective acid mantle and can increase the risk of skin irritations, infections, and allergies.
Some factors that can influence your skin's health are out of your control. For example, your skin is likely to become drier in the cold winter months; this can especially be a nuisance to those who are already prone to dry and/or sensitive skin. In cases of environmental factors like this, pay attention to how your skin is feeling and take the appropriate measures to protect your skin, such as using anti-dry skincare products and avoiding irritating products.
Certain skin conditions
An imbalance in the skin's microbiome, called "dysbiosis," the root cause of which is not always clear. However, "it has been linked to certain health conditions, including eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, acne, rosacea, and wounds that don’t heal." There is ongoing research into "how the skin microbiome affects conditions such as vitiligo, albinism, dandruff, toenail infections, and warts," as well.
Experts are only just starting to understand the complex relationships and balance between us, the environment, and the skin's microbiome.
]]>What makes a product cosmetic and/or medicinal?
The term ‘cosmetic’ covers a wide range of products, including some medicinal products. According to the CTPA (Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association) in the UK, there are three questions to address when classifying as a cosmetic:
In the UK, a ‘medicinal’ product is classified within one of the following definitions:
Essentially, a medicinal product will not cure a disease or condition, rather tackling symptoms and side effects. A medicinal product can also be cosmetic, “intended for both the health and beauty of the skin.” For example, Sebamed’s skincare products fall into both categories as they treat symptoms as well as being applied to and enhancing the beauty of areas of the body outlined within the definition of cosmetic products.
The science behind medicinal skincare
Medicinal skincare products, while typically also classed as cosmetic, are usually formulated towards certain skin types, conditions, and/or specific symptoms. This makes it easy to find accessible skincare targeted towards skin conditions and problems, such as acne-prone skin, psoriasis, or eczema, easing symptoms and soothing the skin.
As one of the leading brands for medicinal skincare, at Sebamed, we promote science for healthy skin. The natural pH value for healthy skin is 5.5 due to natural acidic substances in sweat, sebum, and horny cells. Sebamed skincare products also feature this pH value of 5.5 to promote healthy skin and maintain the acid mantle (protective layer of the skin).
Damage to the acid mantle can come from using abrasive products or environmental factors such as excessive exposure to pollution. Using a gentle cleanser and not overdoing skincare can all contribute to keeping your acid mantle intact. An intact acid mantle helps your skin protect you from infections, irritation, allergies, and drying out.
All our products contain high-quality active ingredients which cleanse, nourish, and protect the skin. Over 120 scientific studies have shown that Sebamed products are highly effective for several skin types, including sensitive and problematic skin.
]]>Here are our top 5 tips to care for your baby’s skin…
1. Don’t bathe your baby every single day
You don’t need to bathe your baby every single day, as this can be counterproductive, drying out the baby’s skin and increasing the risk of sensitivities and atopic dermatitis further down the line. GP and dermatology specialist GP Dr Anita Sturnham recommends bathing your baby on alternate nights; on the nights in-between a full bath, give your baby a quick wash of the hands, face, neck, and nappy area.
2. Protect against dryness and irritation
Using a very mild cleansing agent, such as Baby Sebamed Gentle Wash, will help protect your baby’s skin from dryness. Babies, like adults, will experience dry skin from time to time, especially in winter with “exposure to cold temperatures and dry air.”
Baby products containing allantoin are formulated to help combat your baby’s dry skin, softening and smoothing the skin. Avoid washes and bubble baths containing soap, as these are too much for delicate baby skin. Soap and alkali-free baby products are best when it comes to protecting your baby’s delicate skin.
3. Promote the development of the skin’s natural acid mantle
Support the development of your baby’s natural skin protection with mild, pH balanced products. Baby skincare and wash products with a pH value of 5.5 match that of healthy skin and are clinically proven to promote the development of your baby’s skin’s natural acid mantle. This forms as the baby’s skin matures and becomes slightly acidic, acting as a protective barrier for the skin.
4. Soothe your baby’s irritated nappy area
Babies unfortunately have to deal with the discomfort of an irritated nappy area without being able to tell you about it. So, check for signs of irritation and inflammation whenever you change your baby’s nappy (which is a lot!) A mild nappy rash cream will help soothe any symptoms, as well as prevent the onset, of nappy rash.
The Baby Sebamed Diaper Rash Cream contains an effective lipid formula that helps soothe irritation, a barrier film with titanium dioxide to protect skin against harmful contact with excrements, and a pH value of 5.5 to promote healthy skin.
5. Don’t overdo it with the products
It’s advisable not to go overboard with baby skincare products, especially from several different brands with varying ingredients. Start slowly with newborn skincare so you can ensure that the products are suitable for your baby – any adverse reactions will be easier to rectify if you’re using a limited product selection. Using a lot of different products at once may also dry out your baby’s skin and cause more problems than it fixes.
Baby Sebamed products are suitable for use from birth, so there’s no need to delay your newborn’s skincare routine. The dermatologically and clinically tested Baby Sebamed range supports the development of your baby’s skin with a pH value of 5.5 (the same as healthy skin), 100% soap and alkali-free ingredients, and allantoin for soft and smooth skin.
]]>To understand more about hereditary hair loss, you will need to understand the process of hair growth.
The hair has 4 stages of growth which are:
Stage 1 - Anagen Phase (Growth Phase)
Stage 2 - Catagen Phase (Transition Phase)
Stage 3 - Telogen Phase (Resting Phase)
Stage 4 - Exogen Phase (Shedding Phase)
Each stage has its own time range, which can be affected by age, nutrition, and overall health.
Stage 1: Anagen Phase
This is the longest phase as it takes between 3 to 5 years, during this stage your hair follicles are coming through and will continue to grow until they’re cut or until they reach the end of their life and fall out.
Stage 2: Catagen Phase
This stage lasts for approx. 10 days, during this stage your hair follicles shrink and your hair growth slows down. The hair will separate from the bottom of the hair follicle but remains in place during its final days of growing.
Stage 3: Telogen Phase
This stage lasts for approx. 3 months, during this stage your hairs don’t grow or usually fall out either, which is why it’s called the resting phase.
Stage 4: Exogen Phase
This stage lasts between 2 to 5 months, during this stage your hair is shed from the scalp, often helped along by washing and brushing. You can expect to lose between 50 to 100 hairs per day. It’s also when new hairs are growing in the follicles as old hairs are falling away.
For strong and healthy hair, the hair follicles require continuous supply of nutrients and oxygen especially during the active growth phase (Stage 1).
So what exactly is Hereditary Hair Loss?
Hereditary hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition that reduces the amount of time that the hair spends growing, which is a result of hair follicle miniaturization which is the shrinking of the hair strand and eventually, the hair follicle.
This means that the hair at the temples, hairline and the crown start to thin and recede.
Hereditary Hair Loss:
Hereditary hair loss doesn’t just affect the hair on your head but can also have a number of psychological impacts including poor self-esteem and heightened self-consciousness which is why we recommend that you put self-care above all else and gain support when you need it.
Unfortunately there is no cure for hereditary hair loss, which is why it’s important to act on it as soon as possible and use products that are proven to be effective.
